I started a WordPress Group in Upstate South Carolina because the person that taught me all about the joy of WordPress told me she thought it would be a good idea. Well it turned out to be a fantastic idea and has thrown me into the world of WordPress. I have attended several WordCamps (Birmingham, Louisville, Raleigh, Los Angeles) and continue to seek out more WordPress experiences!
Having learned first hand the power and ease of WordPress, I felt it would be beneficial to bring together other people that could use help with websites and web procedures. Through the platform Meetup.com I was able to organize, facilitate and connect other WordPress users. The results were fantastic! We have a group of 100+ folks that meet monthly to discuss the WP world.
From the Meetup.com platform we branched out to a Facebook Group platform so we could have more dialogue about issues that concerned the group. Facebook has allowed for a great venue that we can easily and quickly ask questions and share information. Take a look at the Facebook Group page here.
I have relocated from the East coast to the West coast but I am still a viable and contributing part of the WordPress Group. Recently, we had a Google Hangout where I was able to virtually be a part of the monthly meetup. We plan to incorporate more of these type broadcasts to allow for people to be involved in the group…no matter where they are located.
Overall the organizing and running of the WordPress Group has taught me so much. It is VERY beneficial bringing together people around a common subject. Everyone benefits and walks away smarter, happier and more fulfilled. Do you have a strong interest in a particular subject? Do you think that others might share that same passion? Just do it and organize your own group. You’ll be glad that you did.
